I love to read every day of the year and fall is an especially lovely time to get lost in the pages of a book. DAW chose a perfect time of year to release this 10th anniversary deluxe edition of The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I mean there are red leaves on the cover… and so I couldn’t resist collecting a few fiery maple leaves from down the road. October + Vermont + this book = magical photo opportunity. The instant I held this book in my hands I had a vision for how I wanted to photograph it. So, on a Saturday morning I collected the leaves and turned some blank parchment paper into the aged and windblown letters you see in the shots below (the good ol’ flame and tea bath treatment).
I also have velvet maple leaves in a few of the photos, plus this pretty little ‘Library’ candle from Illuminati Waxworks (they are my latest candle obsession). A few of the ‘letters’ are ghosts of real vintage letters, and I have no idea what they say – but others are actually excerpts from this book. I had fun with it and hope to do more bookish photo shoots in the future!
This edition contains 50+ extra pages including never-before-seen illustrations by Dan Dos Santos, an updated world map by Nate Taylor, a new author’s note, an illustrated appendix detailing the calendar system and currencies, and how about those stunning red edges!
If you’re already a fan of the Kingkiller Chronicles, this edition is simply a must. And if you have not yet read The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss (what are you waiting for?!) you are missing out on an epic fantasy that will change your reading life. It is complex, lyrical, and masterfully told from the perspective of Kvothe, the hero of the story. It is written in a such a way that parts of it will twine into your own mind and heart, becoming vivid memories you might have lived yourself, even years later. In other words, it really came alive for me and I’m still feeling its resounding effect 8 years after I read it. I’d like to reread it soon now that I have this edition!
I’m also quite excited (and a little nervous) that this series is being adapted for film, tv, and video games. Mostly excited. I mean that will be awesome. Though as I’ve mentioned this book has made quite an impression on me and it is always a bit unsettling when one of your favorites is imagined and recreated in another format. I have high hopes though.
