Wildflowers are one my greatest inspirations, so I was thrilled to discover this small-batch botanical perfume line based in Brooklyn, NY. Hi Wildflower Botanica uses sustainable and ethically sourced botanicals from all over the world to create their perfumes. Founder Tanwi, kindly sent me the Paradise Perfume Sampler Set to experience and I’ve really been enjoying it over the past few weeks. Natural perfumery has always been a passion of mine and these ones are like little stories that take me to faraway places.
These were my impressions of the four samples:
Hanalei: Warm and smooth…it reminds me of something…old fashioned bubble gum…the kind that came wrapped like a taffy and had powdered sugar on it, but not in a sickly sweet way. Sort of vanilla, but floral (that would be the ylang ylang and jasmine).
Lovers Rock: Similar undertones to Hanalei but much more spicy. Can definitely smell the black pepper, clove, and amber. To me this was the strongest scent of the four.
Night Blossom: As someone who loves jasmine, this might be my favorite one…well this and Hanalei might be tied. It is romantic, sexy, and floral. I do smell hints of rose, sandalwood and amber but for me the jasmine takes the lead. I find it calming but also a bit entrancing…like what I imagine a blossoming faerie forest might smell like under the moonlight.
West Indies: This one smelled the most “green” and I immediately imagined ferns and tendrils growing. This one changes on me quickly though – it starts out very green and fresh and then turns a bit peppery/herbal.
After writing my own notes, I went to their website and looked at how they describe each scent in a nutshell:
Night Blossom: Jasmine, Floral, Leathery, Amber, Feminine
Hanalei: Tropical, Spicy, Floral, Sensual, Feminine
Lovers Rock: Hypnotic, Spicy, Resinous, Unisex
West Indies: Herbaceous, Spicy, Fresh, Masculine
I guess I definitely go for the more feminine ones. These layer really well for creating unique combinations (I really like Night Blossom and West Indies together), and like most natural perfumes, these aren’t as strong as artificial fragrance. They don’t last quite as long either – but for me that is a good thing. I’m very sensitive to scent, especially artificial scents. I can’t stand walking through the perfume section of a department store – instant headache. Whereas these ones I can actually wear and enjoy.
They come in a 9ml roll-on ($55) or 15ml roll-on ($80). The sampler set you see here is $25 and well worth it because they are twice the size of typical vial samples and you get to really decide which one you’d like to go for in a bigger size. They also make body products, and hand poured soy candles…I really want to try their ‘Flower Crown’ candle! I’ll definitely let you know what I think if I end up trying that.
Well that’s all for now! I hope you enjoyed this little review. Summer is the perfect time to experiment with botanical perfume. What are your natural/botanical perfume favorites? I’d love to know! I hope you all have a safe and happy 4th of July weekend! xo – Naomi
