If I were to design my ideal lipsticks, they would be very similar to the Tarte Amazonian Butter Lipsticks. Moisturizing, colorful but not too overpowering (buildable color), and housed in super pretty floral packaging. Oh. My. God. These tubes are gorgeous! I love the fact that the packaging is eco-friendly and made with a smooth paper finish and I’ll be honest here, I’ve had them lined up on my desk all week just so I can stare at them as I work. But they’re good for more than staring at, the product inside is great too!

Tarte kindly sent me most of the shades it comes in (all but Coral Blossom) to test out and swatch for you. I also received the new limited-edition color in Ethereal Pink which they just released in celebration of their 15th anniversary. I absolutely love this shade – the perfect neutral pink.

These colors are inspired by the Amazon and also include some seriously buttery ingredients which gives them the smooth, creamy feel (cupuacu butter, murumuru butter, shea butter). They also have ProVitamin A and peppermint oil which gives them a fresh minty scent and feel. These lipsticks feel so good to apply and they give a natural looking creamy shine to your lips.

I’d say they have a semi opaque coverage. They can be applied super lightly almost as a tint, but also provide vibrant color if you fill in your lips entirely. They really do feel more like a balm than a lipstick which is why they are such a pleasure to wear, yet they have much more color than a typical tinted balm.

Tarte Amazonian Butter Lipsticks Swatches

Below I’m wearing Ethereal Pink (left) and Watermelon (right).

At $16 each I feel these are aptly priced, especially for being more natural than many lipsticks on the market. They’re formulated in the USA without parabens, mineral oil, phthalates, sodium lauryl sulfates, or gluten.

Aw…look at them all huddled up together. Having a little meeting about color and flowers and such. Sigh…Happiness. xo – Naomi

I love the color on your nails in the photo on the left! Can you tell me the color/brand?

    Thanks!

Also I just ordered Watermelon (it looks nice on you). I was too impatient to go try it on in the store I purchased it online!

I just purchased Golden Pink, Watermelon, and Tulip. I googled the swatches and your blog came up, and I am having so much fun looking through it! It’s beautiful! I have loved Tarte Cosmetics for a long time just because they are made in the USA and it’s exciting to see a blogger highlight that!

Hi Raissa, I just looked at the packaging for each of these and phenoxyethanol isn’t actually listed on there. I always scan ingredients when buying from Tarte…not all of them are perfect, but they are more natural than many other brands. I try to use products that exclude as many of the “bad ingredients” as possible but it is not always 100%. These lipsticks are still much more natural than many of the mainstream lipsticks out there, however they aren’t the most natural/organic either – and they don’t pretend to be. It is certainly up to you whether you want to ban certain ingredients completely from your use 100% of the time.

Thsnk you for sharing this info. I recently discovered Poppy & Plummy Rose. I absolutely love them. I have fair skin & everything else intensifies on me. Plummy Rose would be my ultimate fsvorite if I could just find it. Have tbese lipsticks been discontinued?

          Hi Carole,
Yes, it looks like they do not make these anymore. You can still find some on sites like Amazon etc, but… I happen to have an extra Plummy Rose that is not opened and I’d be willing to sell. Are you in the USA? I will include free shipping if so. Email me at naomi@sweetvioletbeauty.com if you are interested.
